Respawn Entertainment announce Apex Legends Global Series

Apex Legends Global Series

Respawn Entertainment, the developer behind Apex Legends has announced its esports season for 2020. The Apex Legends Global Series will provide PC esports teams with the chance to qualify, and compete in 12 events in the 2020 calendar. Tournament providers such as PGL, GLL, EA, and Respawn Entertainment will be responsible for these events. Collectively, there will be $3million USD available throughout the year.

How it works

The Apex Legends Global Series uses a mix of online, LAN events, and majors to build their esports circuit. The main entry point into the scene is through online qualifiers, which will be open to all teams looking to get their competitive foot in the door. Further offline events will round-out the attendees to the Apex Legends World Championship later in the year.

Online tournaments may offer Apex Legends Global Series Points, which help qualify teams to the Championship. These events will run off Battlefy.

Challenger Events primarily offer regional competition, such as EMEA, NA, APAC, etc. These events will serve a purpose for Major invites on the calendar.

Premier Events will pit top teams from each region in a LAN environment. They will offer Apex Legends Global Series Points and major invite slots. These events will be run by PGL or GLL.

Majors are the EA flagship events. Here players will compete for prestige as they will fight for the right to say they are the best in the world. There will be four majors throughout the year, that will run the Match Point System. This system was featured at the Apex Legends Preseason Invitational in Poland. Teams need to meet a threshold of points before match point triggers. The team will then need to win a match to then win the event.

When is it happening

Currently, only the first leg of the tournament is revealed to us. Online registration for the first event begins on 11th January. Online qualifiers begin 25th January, which will seed into the first Premier Event.

The first Premier Event will be held in Arlington, Texas in the Esports Stadium. The event will have a $500,000 prize pool available and will offer Apex Legends Global Series Points.
