eUnited win CWL Championship 2019

eUnited lift CWL trophy

An iconic year of competitive CoD has reached a conclusion. After a dominant run of performances, eUnited became the Call of Duty World League champions in what has been called the “best Champs ever”. Here is how it all went down:

Bracket Play

Friday’s action did not disappoint as European teams continued to perform and big teams were eliminated. Splyce were the first team to be eliminated from the bracket following losses against Evil Geniuses and Team WaR. FaZe Clan were reverse swept by 100 Thieves to send them packing and mark the start of a historic losers bracket run for the CWL London winners.

Team Envy and Team Heretics were also eliminated early, finishing 13th and 16th respectively after losing their first two games of bracket play.

One of the major shocks of the weekend was the impressive run made by amateur side Team Singularity. Managing to beat the likes of Team Envy and Luminosity, the European squad proved that they could hang with the best. An outstanding performance from Danish player “CleanX” had the whole community talking:

Team Singularity finished 9-12th alongside Team WaR, Sicario Gaming and Elevate. Next to exit the tournament were Luminosity and last year’s champions, Evil Geniuses, who finished 7-8th and took home $50,000.

After knocking FaZe Clan into the losers bracket, Team Reciprocity progressed to winners round 4 where they were beaten 3-1 by OpTic Gaming. The predominantly European squad then fell to 100 Thieves as they finished 5-6th in the tournament with fellow Europeans, Units.

Enigma6 finished 4th, earning $110,000 whilst OpTic Gaming clinched 3rd place and took home $140,000. Many fans were rooting for The Greenwall but it was not meant to be as they were outclassed by the two grand finalists – eUnited and 100 Thieves. OpTic Gaming has always been a huge part of competitive CoD and with franchising next year, this may have been the last time we see the brand on the main stage.

100 Thieves made an unbelievable losers bracket run beating six teams, including OpTic Gaming, to make it to the grand final against eUnited. Both teams were at the top of their game and put on a terrific display of CoD prowess throughout the tournament. However, only one team could take the trophy and earn their place in history.

Grand Final

An entire season of Black Ops 4 came down to one final match-up. 100 Thieves came through losers bracket after being seconds away from elimination on Friday. eUnited failed to lose a series all tournament as they looked in peak form.

The first map went heavily in eUnited’s favour as they took the Seaside Hardpoint 250-126. 100 Thieves would need to win two best-of-five series in order to come out on top. They began to show some promise as they took the next two maps which put them 2-1 up in the series.

A stubborn eUnited squad were not giving in easily as they forced the series to a 5th map to edge them closer to victory. 100 Thieves did all they could but eUnited won the series and were crowned CWL champions in the most epic finale to the CWL as we know it.
